Basketball Rim Buying Guide

Basketball rims come in a variety of configurations to fit different applications. To the untrained eye, most rims look pretty much the same. But, there are significant differences which impact durability, ball rebound, and injury risk. In this basketball rim buying guide, we’ll explain the differences to help you choose the right rim for your court.

Before delving into the types of rims, let’s explore some rim terminology.

Net – This is likely the part that needs the least amount of explanation. The net is a fairly obvious part of the rim. But, there are different types of nets. The most common net is a nylon anti-whip net. These nets have braided nylon cords which are sufficiently stiff to keep the net below the rim. Nets with softer cords sometimes whip up and over the rim after a ball passes thru. Anti-whip nets pretty much prevent this from happening. You’ll find nylon anti-whip nets on nearly every indoor basketball goal. But, on outdoor courts, you may find rims equipped with chain nets for durability.

No–Tie Net Attachment – This is one of those terms that’s used to describe what it’s not. At one time, the basketball nets were tied to the rim with a string. Indeed, this was the type of rim used on NBA courts until 2009. This proved to be problematic, as the string may come loose, leaving the net hanging on by a thread. The alternative to the tied on net was the no-tie net. (Yes, lots of creativity went into the name.) Most no-tie hoops are constructed with a wire that’s been twisted to create a stirrup in which the net can hang. These rims are not generally not used NBA courts, as the wire stirrups holding the net are considered an injury risk. However, they are approved by NCAA and pretty much every other basketball governing body.

Tube Tie Net Attachment – This is another type of no-tie net attachment, but with a name that is more fitting to what it actually is. Rims with tube tie net attachment have small tube segments welded to the bottom of the ring. There are slight gaps between the tube segments. A wire slides through the tubes allowing the net to hang on the wire where the wire is exposed between tube segments. Tube tie rims are thought to be safer than no-tie net rims as they lack the wire stirrups under the ring. This type of rim is approved by NBA as well as every other basketball governing body.

Wing Brace – This is flat plate steel that’s been curved to match the rim diameter before being welded to the bottom of the rim. The wing brace supports the rim to prevent deformation. Most competition rims have a partial wing brace that extends around the side of the rim closest to the backboard. Fixed rims, not used for competition, may have a continuous wing brace that extends all the way around the bottom of the rim.

Fixed Basketball Rims

These rims provide maximum durability for courts prone to abuse. Fixed rims have no springs and they don’t flex. They are designed to just serve the bare bones necessity of a circle that a basketball can pass thru. They are most often installed at basketball courts with limited supervision, such as city park courts. Fixed rims should not be used on competition courts, as they do not provide any safety benefits. For courts where durability is the primary concern, fixed rims with double rings and continuous wing brace, provide unmatched strength.

Break Away Basketball Rims

These rims were designed for safety. Please visit our What is a Break Away Rim page to learn more about their history. Break away basketball hoops are standard for all competition courts. The hoop is unyielding with the minimal pressure of a basketball impact. This allows the balls to rebound off the rim to a degree preferred on a competition court. However, when a player dunks, the rim will rotate downward to reduce the risk of injury. Most break away hoops have 2 to 3 internal springs. At the time of manufacturing, spring compression is dialed in to provide flex at anywhere from 140 to 180 pounds of pressure on the rim. The compression of these springs is adjustable to player preference. However, manufactures warn against fooling around with the factory set pressure, as it was set to meet NBA, NCAA, and other guidelines.

Recreational Basketball Rims

These rims may be fixed or break away. They are designed for durability, often incorporating attributes of both fixed rims and break away rims. For instance, the Endurance 8800 break away basketball rim has a double ring and continuous wing brace for strength, but also has break away springs for player safety. Recreational basketball hoops typically do not meet governing body guidelines for net attachment, net type, spring stiffness, or ball rebound.

Flex Basketball Rims

These rims provide a soft downward flex with minimal pressure. Flex rims are most commonly found on private recreational courts. Unlike break away rims, flex rims typically have a single spring. These basketball hoops are too soft for competition play. Balls don’t correctly rebound off a flex rim due to the soft spring. These rims are not suitable for public courts where players may cause permanent damage by hanging on the hoops.

How to Choose the Right Basketball Rim

This basketball rim buying guide is intended to educate the reader about the different types of basketball hoops. Ordering the wrong rim can lead to injuries or equipment failure. The list below will help you make the right choice for your court.

Fixed Rims – City park basketball courts and other courts where durability is paramount.

Break Away Rims – Competition courts where governing bodies such as NBA, NCAA, AAU, and NFHS require a break away rim. Training facilities, schools, churches, Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, Salvation Army, or other facilities which host games and where the facility is monitored.

Recreational Rims – Facilities which are not subject to rules of any basketball governing bodies.

Flex Rims – Residential courts where the risk of equipment abuse is minimal.

Wall Mounted Basketball Hoop Buying Guide

There are numerous options for wall mounted basketball goals. But, we’re only going to focus on hoops with sturdy glass backboards and spring rims. Those goals which are lightweight and flimsy are not covered in this buying guide. To simplify things, we’re going to break it down to 4 main categories. This wall mounted basketball hoop buying guide will address the benefits and limitations of each type.

Narrow Offset Residential

These wall mount hoops are generally equipped with 60” to 72” glass backboards, spring rims, and backboard pads. They typically provide an offset from the wall of 24” to 36”. Most designs provide rim heights of 6’ up to 10’. These goals are a fine option for players just looking to practice free throws and 3 point shots. However, they’re not well suited for lay ups or dunks, as the offset from the wall is unsafe. The other concern with this style of goal is that the wall attachment points are too close together. This concentrates all of the weight of the goal into a small portion of the wall, rather than spreading the load over a larger area. Unfortunately, this led to a horrible death in 2018, when one of these types of hoops fell off a wall and killed a 14 year boy. You can read more about this story here. Stationary Wall Mount with Optional Height Adjuster

The stationary wall mount goal is the most popular option for serious athletes who don’t want any performance reduction. These goals are outfitted with professional glass backboards and come with numerous rim options. And, unlike the residential hoops listed above, the stationary wall mounts are capable of having offsets from the wall of up to 12’. These goals are designed for all levels of play, from grade school children to NBA pros.

3 Point vs 4 Point Backstop

The wall attachment framework is available as a 3 point or 4 point connection. With the 3 point design, 2 pipes connect the upper corners of the backboard, while a 3rd pipe connects at the bottom, directly behind the rim. This is the strongest possible configuration, as all of the load on the rim is carried by the backstop, rather than by the backboard. The 4 point connection is not as strong, as there is no backstop framework behind the rim. With the 4 point design, the corners of the backboard are supported. To the casual observer, 4 seems better than 3. However, support behind the rim is superior to support at the lower corners, since all of the load is applied to the rim. Providing support behind the rim reduces the risk of shattering glass. Indeed, we have never had a glass backboard shatter with a 3 point backstop or when a height adjuster is added. Side Fold Wall Mount with Optional Height Adjuster

The side fold wall mount hoop is a great option when the gym is mixed use. This system includes the same high performance backboards and rims as the stationary wall mount, but with the added feature of folding the backboard close to the wall. These units can be installed to fold either to the right or to the left. And, the wall offset can be anywhere from 4’ up to 12’. The backstop on side fold systems are 4 point, which connect to the corners of the backboard. Therefore, we only recommend a side fold hoop with a strong steel framed backboard or with a height adjuster. The LXP4200 steel framed glass backboard from Gared Sports provides the greatest strength of any backboard on the market today. Indeed, we have never seen this model shatter. Fold Up Wall Mount with Optional Height Adjuster

The fold up wall mount goals are another great option for mixed use facilities. Fold up systems include the same high performance backboard and rim options as the stationary wall mount and side fold mount systems. But, unlike the other goals in this wall mounted basketball hoop buying guide, fold up units require a winch or hoist to raise and lower the backboard. The hoist is available as a manual worm gear winch or an electric hoist. The wall offset for a fold up basketball goal can be anywhere from 4’ up to 12’. The backstop on fold up systems are 4 point, which connect to the corners of the backboard. Therefore, we only recommend a fold up system with a strong steel framed backboard or with a height adjuster. Worm Gear Winch vs Electric Hoist

If cost is the only consideration, then go with a worm gear winch. However, for ease of use, there’s no beating the electric hoist. Aside from the cost difference, you should also consider these items when trying to choose between manual and electric:

Frequency – are you frequently raising and lowering your backboard? If yes, then the electric hoist is quick and easy to operate, as the motor is powered on and off with a key switch. On the other hand, the worm gear winch is manually operated with a hand crank. It can also be operated with a modified slow speed high torque electric drill. But, this requires a power cord and the drill. A light weight stock battery powered drill will not suffice. This video shows operation with an electric hoist.
Wiring – If running wiring to the electric hoist is not possible, then the manual worm gear winch is the only option. The electric hoist is outfitted with a 4 prong twist lock plug that fits a corresponding 4 prong twist lock outlet. Power to the outlet is controlled by the key switch mounted elsewhere in the wall. Adding the necessary junction boxes and wiring is a piece of cake, if done during building construction. But, adding these things after construction is more difficult. This type of work may also requires the services of a licensed electrician, depending upon the building codes in your area.

Optional Height Adjusters

The height adjusters available for the wall mount basketball goals are available as manual or electric. The height adjusters lower the rim from 10’ to 8’ and can be stopped at any point in between. The manual height adjusters are operated with a long hook that engages the bottom of the height adjuster. The electric systems come with a motor and key switch and operate similarly to the electric hoists used on the fold up goals. You can see this functionality in this video.

Height Adjusters incorporate a Direct Mount Bracket. This is a industry term used to describe a mounting configuration where the rim bolts pass through the backboard and into a structural bracket. Forces applied to the rim are transmitted into the direct mount bracket, which greatly reduces the risk of shattered glass. Indeed, we are unaware of any of our clients who have had broken glass when a direct mount bracket and height adjuster are installed.

Height adjusters can be added to any of the stationary, side fold, or fold up hoops. All of the wall mount packages provide the option to add a height adjuster.

What is a Basketball Backstop?

The simple answer to the question, “What is a basketball backstop?”, is the structure that holds the backboard. Backstops are generally available as ground mount, portable, wall mount, or ceiling suspended. The best backstop for your court is one that fits the overall function of the space. Of course, the other important consideration is what the backstop is connected to.

Ground Mount Backstops

Ground mount backstops are most often used for outdoor courts. However, they can also be indoors. These backstops typically consist of a single post with arms extending from the post to the backboard. The post is firmly anchored to a heavy concrete footer to keep the post steady. Ground mount backstops are available with integrated height adjusters to raise and lower the backboard. They’re also available with stationary backboards which do not move. The distance between the post and backboard is sometimes referred to as the “Safe Space”. Most heavy weight ground mounted basketball goals provide a safe space of at least 3’. Primary Benefits – The number one benefit of a ground mounted basketball goal is that they are typically lower in cost. They are all weather for indoor and outdoor use. And, they can be relocated, though this would require a new anchor.

Biggest Limitations – Ground mounted basketball goals require a heavy concrete foundation. If planned correctly, the anchor bolts can be set into a game court foundation when the concrete is poured. But, adding to an existing concrete foundation may require digging a hole to pour 1,000 pounds or more of concrete as a footer for the post.

Portable Backstops

Portable backstops are generally only used when it’s not possible to mount a backstop to the floor, wall, or ceiling. They’re mostly used on university and professional courts in arenas. Safe and sturdy portable backstops are heavy, difficult to move, and take up a lot of floor space. These systems may also damage court flooring if not installed properly. Lighter weight systems are not recommended as they have a history of falling over and causing injuries. As the safe space between the backboard and the base of the backstop increases, the size and weight of the base also increases. In a small gym, the base may take up valuable floor space, limiting traffic around the outside of the court. While we carry and full line of portable basketball goals, we always recommend going with a wall mounted unit if at all possible.

Primary Benefits – Portable basketball goals are ideal for temporary use or arena settings where permanently mounted goals are not an option. These goals retain some resale value and can be shipped to new locations.

Biggest Limitations – Portable basketball goals are not easily portable, unless they’re the lightweight kind, which tend to tip over. The heavy weight sturdy portable units are not easy to move in an out of position. And, they can only be moved to another gym with a freight truck. The base of these goals takes up valuable floor space. And, the weight may damage the gym floor. For these reasons, we only recommend these goals for arena courts.

Wall Mount Backstops

Wall mount backstops are available in stationary, side fold, and up fold configurations. They are available with or without height adjusters. And, they can be positioned anywhere from 6” to 12’ from the wall. Wall mounted systems are almost always lower cost than ceiling mounted goals. They are also easier to service, since most of the parts are within reach with an 8’ to 10’ A frame ladder. Stationary backstops are the easiest to install and easiest to customize. Because stationary units do not fold up or sideways, these systems can be modified to fit irregular walls. This includes fitting them around obstructions such as doors, windows, and columns. Ceiling Suspended Backstops

Ceiling suspended backstops offer the greatest design versatility. These are available as stationary, forward folding, rear folding, and side folding. All ceiling mount units are custom designed to fit the ceiling height and structure. They can be hung from ceilings as low as 17’ and those that go higher than 30’. When designing ceiling suspended backstops, other ceiling mounted items must be considered. The location of air handlers, air ducts, lights, sound systems, projectors, fire suppression systems, and other items might need to be relocated. Ceiling suspended backstops cost more than wall mount and cost more to install. Servicing these systems may also cost more as reaching attachment points will require a mechanized man lift or scissor lift. Of all the backstop options, ceiling mounted are the only ones which generally require installation by an experienced crew. However, simple stationary (non-folding) units can be installed by a general handyman.

Primary Benefits – Ceiling suspended backstops offer the greatest versatility and are a great option when you want a basketball goal which can be folded up out of sight.

Biggest Limitations – Ceiling suspended systems cost more to buy, install, and maintain. The units are designed to fit a specific building and are unlikely to be relocated and used in another facility. They are generally installed by an experienced crew who specialized in the installation of these systems.

What is the Best Backboard?

To answer the question, “What is the best backboard?”, you must first answer a few other questions. Basketball backboards come in a variety of sizes for both indoor and outdoor courts. They also come with different mounting configurations and are designed for varying levels of play. So, a backboard designed for an outdoor grade school court would not be appropriate for an NBA arena.

Competition Backboards

If you’re asking, “What s the best backboard for a competition court?”, then the simple answer is a steel framed glass backboard. However, depending upon the mounting setup, a cost saving aluminum framed glass backboard might be just fine.

Steel Framed Competition Backboards

Today’s strongest glass backboards have steel frames. Though perhaps someday materials such as carbon fiber may be used in place of steel. But, that’s a ways down the road. For now, steel framing is the king of the court, offering better support to reduce the risk of shattering glass. The Gared Sports LXP4200 is the strongest steel framed glass backboard on the market. In fact, Gared Sports indicates that this backboard can handle up to 1,100 pounds of pressure before damage occurs.

Aluminum Framed Competition Backboards

The Gared Sports AFRG42 is a popular aluminum framed glass backboard. According to Gared Sports, this backboard can handle 900 pounds of pressure with a direct mount configuration. On a court where players don’t dunk or hang on the rim, an aluminum framed backboard is a suitable choice. But, if you anticipate a higher level of play, then make the upgrade to a backboard with a steel frame.

Mounting Matters Most

Most backboards are mounted with either a 4 point mount or a direct mount. When determining, “What is the best backboard?”, you must consider how it’s mounted. A typical 4 point mount is one in which the backboard is attached to the backstop at the 4 corners of the backboard. A direct mount is one in which the backboard is connected to the backstop directly behind the rim. This provides more structure behind the rim which results is less shattered glass.
