The Basketball Rim Height Adjuster – 1131 Manual is sold as a replacement for an existing faulty height adjuster.  The height adjuster purchased as a single item does not include mounting hardware.  If you’re looking to add a height adjuster to an existing basketball goal, which does not already have a height adjuster, then you also need hardware which is appropriate to fit your backboard and backstop.

What’s Included
This product only includes the height adjuster and a crank handle.  For multiple units, 1 crank handle is provided for every 2 height adjusters.

Installation
Replacing an existing Basketball Rim Height Adjuster – 1131 Manual requires removal of the rim, backboard and existing height adjuster.  We recommend doing this with a scissor lift or with scaffolding and a chain hoist or electric hoist.  You’ll need 3/4″ and 9/16″ sockets and wrenches, a carpenters level.  An experienced crew of 2 can replace a height adjuster in as little as 2 hours.  If you have any questions, please contact us to speak to an experienced installer.

Maintenance
The manufacturer recommends lubricating the slide tubes and the screw rod every 6 months with white lithium aerosol grease.  This is done when the height adjuster is at the upper position.  It is not necessary to lubricate the nylon bearings.  We recommend using a piece of scrap cardboard as a shield to prevent the grease from getting on the backboard or other non moving parts of the equipment.  Please see the height adjuster Installation, Operation and Maintenance Instructions for additional information.

Backboard Pads

The Gared Sports Pro-Mold backboard pads (Gared Sports item# PMCE) fit most 6′ competition backboards.  The pads are available in 15 standard colors to closely match your gym’s theme.

The pads are dense urethane foam and have a smooth outer surface.  The pads are designed to fit a backboard that is 72″ long and up to 2″ wide.  A set of pads is two L shaped pads which attach to the bottom of the backboard and to run about a third of the way up each side.  One set of pads fits one backboard.  Order multiple sets for multiple backboards.

Installation

The pads are pre-drilled and include 1/4″ bolts with flange nuts.  Most competition backboards have pre-drilled holes which fit this pad.  However, if your backboard does not have the pad mounting holes, then you may need to drill them.  Provided your backboard already has pad mounting holes, the only tools required for installation are a phillips screw driver and a 7/16″ deep socket or wrench.  We recommend adding a thread locking liquid such as Loctite to reduce the possibility of the bolts loosening from board vibration.

Colors

Gared Sports Pro-Mold backboard pads are available in 15 colors: black, brown, burgundy, columbia blue, forest green, gold, grey, kelly green, maroon, navy blue, orange, purple, red, royal blue,  and yellow.

Other Components

If you’re also upgrading other components, we probably have everything you need.  The Gared Sports LXP4200 and AFRG42 competition glass backboards are both compatible with the Pro-Mold backboard pads  The LXP4200 has a steel frame and is recommended when players are dunking or hanging on the rim.

Height Adjuster for Ceiling Mount Basketball Hoop

The Gared Sports Height Adjuster for Ceiling Mount Basketball Hoop turns a stationary hoop into a height adjustable system.  The kit includes a height adjuster (manual or electric), U bolt brackets to connect to a 6-5/8” diameter backstop, and brackets to connect a 72” x 42” competition backboard.

The Gared Sports Height Adjuster for Ceiling Mount Basketball Hoop fits most modern single post ceiling mount basketball goals.  This system is not designed for ladder frame ceiling mount goals.  Please review the information below and double check the dimensions of your basketball hoop before ordering.  If you have any questions, please contact us to speak to an experienced installer.

Height Adjuster

The height adjuster in this kit is available as manual (Gared Sports item #1132) or electric (Gared Sports item #1172).  The manual kit includes a hand crank while the electric kit includes a key switch.  The height adjuster lowers the rim from 10’ to 8’.

Backstop Mast Fit

Most single post ceiling mount backstops have a 6-5/8” diameter mast.  However, some older systems have a 6” mast.  This height adjuster kit will not fit a 6” mast.  To determine the diameter of the mast, we recommend measuring the circumference.  A 6-5/8” mast will have a circumference of roughly 20-3/4”.  We recommend using the circumference because measuring the diameter at the bottom of the mast may give you an incorrect measurement.  This is due to the bottom of the mast sometimes being out of round.

U-Bolts

The U-bolts fit a 6-5/8” diameter mast.  The U-bolts attach to the mast at heights of 10’-0-1/4” and 13’-5-/8” above the finished floor.  The mast should extend down to 9’-6” above the finished floor so that the lower U-bolt is 6” above the bottom of the mast.  If you have a bent mast or fold up backstop, please ensure that nothing will interfere with attaching the height adjuster U-bolts at the above listed height measurements.

Compatible Backboards

Most competition basketball backboards will attach to the Height Adjuster for Ceiling Mount Basketball Hoop.  Brands such as Gared Sports, Spalding, Draper, Porter, and Spalding have similar mounting configurations.  The mounting plates at the top corners of the backboard should be 63” apart on center.  The slots in the mounting plates should be 3” from the top of the backboard and 33” above the rim.  The backboard should have a rim plate with holes  at 4” x 5” or 5” x 5” for rim hardware.

Other Components

If you’re also upgrading other components, we probably have everything you need.  The Gared Sports LXP4200 and AFRG42 competition glass backboards are both compatible with this height adjuster kit.  The LXP4200 has a steel frame and is recommended when players are dunking or hanging on the rim.  We also have backboard pads which fit both of these great backboards.  All of our competition and professional break away rims also fit these backboards.

This electric hoist for basketball goals is used by all major basketball goal equipment manufacturers.  This includes Gared Sports, Performance Sports Systems, Draper, Porter, and Spalding.  The mounting flange is designed to mount to a wall or 3.5 inch pipe.  The motor is 3/4 horse power, 120 volt, with grooved drum, and limit switches.

Load Rating
This electric hoist for basketball goals is designed to lift up to 1250 pounds.

Wire Rope Type
1/4” diameter 7×19 galvanized wire rope, commonly referred to as aircraft cable.  This cable has a break strength of 7,000 pounds.  This cable IS NOT supplied with the motor.

Rope Drum
The drum is 4.5 inches with grooves for orderly winding of the wire rope.  The wire rope goes through the drum for secure anchoring.  The drum holds 30’ of wire rope on the first layer and an additional 25’ on the second layer.  The maximum drum capacity is 55’.

Pressure Roller
The wire rope is held tightly against the drum with a spring loaded pressure roller.  This ensure that the cable winds neatly into the grooves of the drum without jumping over grooves.  The pressure roller maintains pressure even if the cable slacks between the hoist and the backboard.

Limit Switches
The limit switches control when the motor stops at the upper and lower limits of backboard travel.  The switches on this motor are gear driven, providing the greatest level of accuracy.

Motor
The motor is 3/4 horse power, 9.5 amps.  The motor comes with a  6 power cord with a 4 prong twist lock plug rated for 20 amps.

Gearbox
The gears are hardened metal to outlast and out perform other gear materials.  The gears are in a sealed aluminum housing.  The 200:1 worm gear provides positive locking to hold under load.

Frame Construction
The frame is designed to mount to a 3.5” diameter pipe or a flat surface such as a wall.  The hardware for pipe mounting is included.  The hardware for flat surface mounting IS NOT included as this hardware will vary depending upon the construction of the surface.  The frame is powder coated black for corrosion resistance.

Installation
Installing the hoist is fairly straight forward.  Assuming that you’re replacing a defective hoist you’ll simply detach the old unit and attach the new unit in the same location.  It seems like we have installed hundreds of these over the many years that we have been installing and servicing equipment.  Our expert advice is that you always install a new wire rope and any associated hardware when installing a new hoist.  The wire rope should wrap around the drum 4 or 5 times before running towards the backboard.  These 4 to 5 drum wraps should never unwrap.  Once the motor is mounted and the new wire rope is installed, the last step is to set the limit switches.  It is helpful to have 2 people for this process, one person to operate the key switch and another to fine tune the limit switches.  The lower limit switch should be set to allow the wire rope to have a tiny amount of slack when the goal is in the playing position.  The backboard should not have tension on the wire rope when in the playing position.
