Break Away vs Flex Rims
The Premium Collegiate Basketball Rim is a breakaway rim designed to pivot when approximately 140 pounds of dynamic energy load is applied. Dynamic energy load occurs during strong dunks or high-impact play. Consequently, the rim protects backboards from shattering while allowing controlled rim movement.
Breakaway rims use springs under compressive load to hold the rim horizontally until a dynamic energy load activates it. In contrast, flex rims pivot with little force and are intended for static energy loads. Additionally, the springs on this rim are factory-set to break at roughly 140 pounds, though installers can adjust this setting as needed.
The rim features an official orange powder coat and a no-tie net attachment. These features improve durability and reduce the risk of hand injuries during intense play.
Installation
Installing the rim takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the installer’s experience. Most backboards require two carriage bolts at the top of the rear mounting plate and two at the bottom.
